Living the Lyrics: “No Longer Slaves” by Bethel Music

Music Is Praying Twice

St. Augustine of Hippo is credited with saying “he who sings prays twice,” once with our music and once with our words. This means that when we sing we are glorifying God, not only with the words, but with the music itself. Have you ever felt that way? Like the notes themselves were guiding your prayer? Music speaks, and when we give it to God, He can use it to speak directly to our hearts.

No Longer Slaves

Bethel Music’s song “No Longer Slaves” begins by beautifully expressing that, saying to God: “You unravel me, with a melody. You surround me with a song.” When we allow the Holy Spirit into our praise, we allow Him to unravel us and put us back together again.

This song is an anthem of freedom from fear, repeating over and over that “I’m no longer a slave to fear. I am a child of God.”

What a beautiful concept. The more I listen to this song, the more it means to me because at different points in my life, it means different things.

What Fear Enslaves You?

Perhaps it is fear of not being enough. Maybe it’s fear of the future or fear of failure. Maybe you fear the opinion of others. Regardless of how fear enslaves you, God promises to rescue us. In Isaiah He says “For I am the Lord, your God, who grasp your right hand; it is I who say to you, do not fear, I will help you.” In the New Testament, Jesus tells us that we are children of God.

As we sing this chorus, we can rejoice at the fact that, as God’s beloved children, we are no longer held captives of fear, but freed by His love.

After all, as the song says “You split the sea, so I could right through it. All my fears were drowned in perfect love. You rescued me, so I could stand and sing. I am a child of God.”

If you haven’t heard this song, go pull it up on YouTube, sit down, and pray it. Pray the music, pray the words, and let the Father speak to your heart.

“No Longer Slaves” Lyrics

You unravel me, with a melody
You surround me with a song
Of deliverance, from my enemies
Till all my fears are gone

I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God

From my mothers womb
You have chosen me
Love has called my name
I’ve been born again, into your family
Your blood flows through my veins

I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God

I am surrounded
by the arms of the father
I am surrounded
by songs of deliverance

We’ve been deliberated
from our bondage
We are the sons and the daughters
Let us sing our freedom

You split the sea
So I could walk right through it
All my fears were drowned in perfect love
You rescued me
So I could stand and sing
I am child of God…
