Humans of SteubySTL: Andrew and Angela

Andrew and Angela have been volunteering at SteubySTL for ten years. This summer, at both conferences, Andrew will be helping with prayer ministry and Angela will be in the nurse’s station; she secretly hopes she won’t need to see you there, but if you need any help, they’ll treat you right!

When Angela is not helping with this conference, she loves working (she claims to have the coolest job ever), running, yoga, and spending time with her husband and son. She’s a CRNA in real life, ran a half marathon less than a year after giving birth, actually enjoys the extreme level of nerd her husband is on, and secretly wishes she lived in Lothlorien.

Andrew enjoys his work for a tech startup, spending time with his wife and son, and finding some time at the end of the day for some gaming. He’s a huge nerd, mostly focused on technology and Star Wars, and he watches more content on Twitch and YouTube in a normal day than any human probably should.

Angela’s favorite part of the weekend is seeing so many hearts touched by the presence of Christ and moved to confession: “I find the long lines are refreshing!  It’s good to be that vulnerable and open to God’s mercy!” Andrew’s favorite part of the weekend is seeing someone who walked in on Friday very closed off begin to open up and engage their faith in a way they’ve been afraid to previously.

One year Andrew was helping coordinate bus arrival, which involved stepping onto each bus to provide directions and answer questions.  He was standing at the doors of the next bus ready to walk up the stairs but as soon as the doors opened was nearly knocked off his feet by a very quick priest in a cassock.  It turned out the priest on this particular bus was one of his good friends from high school that he hadn’t seen since his ordination earlier that year: in his excitement to greet Andrew, they both nearly ended up on the ground.

Angela wants you to know that almost every time a teen comes to First Aid feeling sick, she has to break it to them that it’s not good to eat carbs and drink Mountain Dew all weekend. To stay out of the nurse’s station, follow her simple advice, “Water. Protein. You’ll feel much better.”

To keep the spirit of Steubenville (which is really the Spirit of Christ) alive year-round, Angela encourages us all to “Do small things with great love.  You don’t have to be rocking an arena with praise and worship to be a witness to Christ.  Love people everyday.  People you know and people you don’t know.  Do things for others, not because you want to, but because it’s what Jesus would do.”

Andrew has experienced that routines and rituals can help sustain the spirit of Steuby year round.  “Whether its listening to a song that you connected with, saying a prayer on your way to school, or however you can incorporate the spirit of Steuby into your daily life – that daily reminder will help keep that spirit throughout the year.”
