You are a beloved daughter of God the Father. Sr. Karolyn has heard that a million times, and maybe you have too. However, it is something that bears repeating, because we are enough. We are enough not because we have done great things, rather because we belong to the Father.
Once, as Sister was driving to give a talk about religious vocations, she looked in the rearview mirror and saw an unfortunate sight: flashing police lights. After she was pulled over and given a ticket for running a stop sign, she got sucked into a familiar spiral of negativity. She was putting herself down and starting to question her own goodness. It was then that the Lord spoke to her heart and reminded her that she is His beloved daughter.
Recognizing the Voice of Jesus
Sr. Karolyn taught us that discernment isn’t just about our future vocations. Discerment is about recognizing when God is speaking to us. Sister was able to recognize the voice of God calling her His beloved daughter, because she has continued to stay close to Him through prayer. Jesus calmly quiets, convicts, and encourages us. When the enemy invades our thoughts, he harshly confuses, pushes, and condemns us. The voice of Jesus reminds us that we are enough because we are His. As Sister Karolyn taught us, “You’re enough for [Him] to call you by name. You’re enough for [Jesus] to choose you. You’re enough for [Him] to invite you into relationship.”
When we experience negativity and doubt in our lives, we know that we are not listening to the voice of Jesus. We need to refocus and remind ourselves that we truly are daughters of God. Jesus died for us because He wants to be with us. He wants us to be close to Him. We are His beloved ones. Our identity is found in Him.
