As Christians, many of us have questioned or been questioned about our faith, especially regarding God’s existence. Those of us who have “come out of the womb with a Rosary in my hand” like Mike Gormley have been taught about the Bible for years and perhaps have not gone to great lengths to question anything. In his case, Mike says, “I was never really taught how to pray, I was taught how to repeat.”
God: the Uncaused Cause
With his love for science, he describes how he began to question his faith in high school as a result of not feeling intellectually honest when saying the Creed in Mass. Mike desired the truth; he wanted to know WHERE evil comes from. He even turned to researching Islam, Judaism, Atheism, and several other philosophies.
He came to the conclusion that “God is the One present here and now, God is, from God comes forth everything else.”
An Invitation to Seek
Mike opened his talk with John 1:29 which says, of John the Baptist,
“The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.'”
At the time of this passage, large numbers of lambs were slaughtered every year during the week of Passover. When John the Baptist revealed Jesus to be the Son of God made flesh, the crowd followed Him and He turned around to ask them, “What do you seek?”
This idea of questioning what we truly seek allows us to grow in our faith and grow in our desire to understand God and the Trinity. Mike encourages us to elevate, declaring that “your questioning is a sign of a mind that is awake.”
Mike closed his talk with a challenge to reflect on for the remainder of the weekend: “Ask yourself, where you are, what are you seeking?”
