10 People You May Find At SteubySTL

The Many Faces of SteubySTL

Our summer conferences are an incredible opportunity to be renewed in your faith… and they are also an opportunity for some pretty good people watching. If you’ve been to Steubystl in the past, you know that it attracts thousands of amazing individuals – including some unique types of people. If this summer will be your first conference, get ready. You’re likely to encounter some (if not all) of these types of folks during your trip to Springfield, Missouri.

1) The Free Hug Enthusiasts

There may be no better place in the Midwest to give & receive free hugs in the summer than this conference. If you see these people, be sure to give them some love.

Also, be on lookout for the The Deluxe Hug Guy who sometimes can be found standing next to them. While we’re not sure if his $1 hugs are all that different than the free options nearby, we definitely appreciate his expertise in capitalism & entrepreneurship. [A reliable source informed the author that this guy made $11 at last year’s conference, which he promptly spent on late night snacks.]

2) The People in Costumes

No, it’s not Halloween in July – it’s a normal Saturday at SteubySTL. Horses, bananas, gorillas, penguins, hot dogs… we’ve seen it all. Some people just love being silly and dressing up just for the fun of it!

3) The Selfie Takers

They’re everywhere. They live in joyful hope that their #steubystlselfie ends up on the big screen. We can’t help but wonder why this dude is taking selfies with two cameras… perhaps he thinks it’s twice as likely he’ll make it on our feed?

4) The Shouters

In real life, and at our conferences, these people are loud and proud. Just remember that there’s a time a place for everything; it’s not a problem during our fun songs, but it can be pretty distracting when people are praying. So, please…pray about it before you shout about it, OK?

5) The ‘Please Open the Gate Now!’ People

These people just can’t wait to enter “The Q” & experience all of that conference goodness – they want to be first inside, and we can’t blame them! Listen up for the many creative ways they trice to entice the gatekeeper to open up early.

6) The Flag Waver

You can see him coming a mile away. With his Papal flag waving proudly, this guy’s a true Catholic patriot.

7) The Bishops

Whether they are distributing communion like Bishop Hermann, tossing water bottles like Bishop Rice, or taking fun pics with teens like Archbishop Carlson, our bishops from the Archdiocese of Saint Louis are the best!

8) The Lost and Lonely Chaperone

He showed up on Friday afternoon with a big group of teens, and yet somewhere along the way, he lost them…. or did he? Maybe he’s just enjoying a moment of peace and quiet. We won’t disturb him to ask.

9) The Clothespinners

Unfortunately, we can’t show you who these people are because no one has ever seen their faces. But you’ve got to give ‘em props for the way they attach messages of love with ninja-like stealth.

10) Our Conference Volunteers

Who else would take time away from work, home, family, and weekend relaxation to come to Springfield to take care of you? These people love you so much that they give up their weekend to serve you… joyfully. And thank goodness they do, because there’s no way this conference happens without them!

Which One Are You?

Have you ever been one of these people? Is there anything we missed? Please let us know by leaving a comment on this post. Or, better yet, post a picture of yourself on Instagram being one of these folks and share the link below so we can see you in action. We look forward to seeing you at SteubySTL this summer!
