Humans of Steubystl: Cardboard Pope Francis

Here at Steuby STL, we are blessed to have so many priests and religious with us during the weekend. We would be remiss, however, if we didn’t highlight one of our favorite members of the clergy: Cardboard Pope Francis.

He has been a faithful volunteer at the Steuby Bookstore for years, and while he always intends to help unload merchandise and ring up patron’s purchases, he is far too busy posing for selfies with his adoring flock. Especially his favorites—teenagers.

“I never wanted to be a celebrity, but a cardboard cutout’s got to do, what a cardboard cutout’s got to do.”

His favorite part of the conference is getting to chat with teens and advise them about their book purchases: “I always recommend Laudato Si—it’s natural for me to be pro-Earth and pro-recycling. I’m made of paper.”

The hardest part? “Papercuts. I feel so dang guilty when someone comes in for a hug and I accidentally get them.”

He’ll talk your ear off about mercy– something about a Jubilee year. Unfortunately, being made of cardboard is listed as an impediment to Orders, so he can’t hear your Confession. What he lacks in priestly faculties of the true Vicar of Christ though, he more than makes up for it with his wit and good-nature.

My mom is from the South, which landed me a double first name. I love Jesus and sweet tea, but only when mixed with lemonade (the tea, not Jesus). I have freckles on just one side of my face, am often mistaken for a ginger, and work as Catholic youth minister for the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Pretty social for an introvert: @eviesueward
